Students are most likely to make meaningful study choices when receiving support. Pre-entry student support assists students in making the right study choice. Also, they get to figure out their strengths and weaknesses. Higher education institutions need to make it a priority to offer students support before they enrol for study.
Ehlanzeni TVET College offers support to students before they enrol for study. Furthermore, the support goes further for the duration they are with the college. This assists students to make meaningful choices of their studies.
The pre-entry student support includes
Career counselling
Is to assist students with their career choices. Whether they are decided or not. The student`s counsellor will help the students explore their choice. To ensure that they have full information and they will be comfortable with the course they have chosen.
Selection and placement (tests)
Students are required to write selection tests to help determine the strengths and weaknesses of students. It helps them discover which challenges they might discover in the long run. Also, which part of their studies they will face fewer challenges.
Orientation programmes
This is a process of introducing students to the college. They are assisted to get familiar with the college services that will help them with their studies. Therefore, students are required to attend orientation days before they start with their academic year.
Financial aid
The college assists students to apply for financial aid (NSFAS) before they enrol for their studies. This is to assist students who will struggle to cover their tuition fees, accommodation, and food for the duration of the study with the college.
Code of conduct
This consists of the order students should carry themselves in. There are college rules that students must follow. Such as timekeeping, respect towards other learners and student staff. Also, the use of drugs and alcohol consumption in the school premises. Furthermore, students should not damage the college`s property, or perform any acts of theft.
Most importantly, we have discovered that pre-student support has a positive contribution to the progress of learners. They fully adjust to the institution`s environment as they are more informed about their expectations. In addition, the management easily manages situations that contradict with the information offered to the students before they enrol for their academic year.
