The student intake was mostly from SOMAFCO (Solomon Mahlangu Freedom College, from exile and the nearby community). The educators were seconded from the then GOUT with the understanding of Chief EJ Mabuza.
After the 1994 general election, it changed to be a state-aided college with the name Mthimba Community College. After the merger of technical colleges in 2000-2001, it was named Mthimba Campus, a campus of Ehlanzeni TVET College, and currently has 430 students. Mthimba Campus is 43km from the Central Office of the College in Nelspruit.
