The whole world is facing a pandemic that has adjusted and limited almost every operation. The South African education system was unfortunate as well since it had to adjust to the changes. COVID-19 is a virus that is easily transmittable in the midst of a lot of people engaging at once. Looking at the fact that campuses have a lot of students, there will be measures in place to control the spread of the virus.
On the 27th of December 2020, President Cyril Ramaphosa announced that the country will stay on alert level 3 of the lockdown. Having said that, the education system had to also make strict regarding studying and learning. To try and reduce the number of infections, students will not be returning to campuses all at once.
The education system is introduced to a data-driven world
TVET Colleges around the country are going to reopen according to the calendar provided to them. Students are reopening on the 25th of January, 1st, 08th, and 15th of February 2021. However, registrations will mostly take place online to avoid the spread of the virus. Colleges have to be strict on students and workers following the COVID-19 measures.
One of the measures the government is taking for this measures is through technology. This means E-learning is thoroughly introduced to students. Students will be familiar with the E-learning technology and continue to study from home in preparation for their exams and completing their assignments.
In a much broader sense, it is still a concern whether all students will be able to access online learning. However, the government is taking major steps to ensure that all learners have access to their lessons and always up to date with their tasks. Looking at it from a positive view, students will be able to revisit their lessons and grasp as much as they can.
What should be monitored during schools’ reopening?
- Students and staff should always follow the necessary measures to prevent the spread of the virus. That is wearing masks, frequently wash hands with soap, and sanitizing.
- Conduct tests on anyone showing symptoms.
- Disinfect frequently touched surfaces.
- Immediate isolation of anyone found infected with the COVID-19 virus.
