On Tuesday, 28 January 2025, Ehlanzeni TVET College proudly hosted the Executive Mayor of Ehlanzeni District Municipality, Honourable Cllr EIT Shabangu, during the annual induction and orientation program for new students. The event, designed to prepare students for their higher education journey, was expertly guided by Mr. MV Qwabe, who ensured a well-structured program featuring key speakers offering essential guidance on college life.

Opening Address and Encouragement
The event commenced with a prayer by Mrs. Thwala, fostering a sense of unity and purpose. Following this, Pastor AA Sekgobela from Changed by the Word International Church delivered an uplifting message, reminding students of the abundant opportunities ahead of them.
Mrs. SV Nkosi, Campus Manager, then provided an overview of the college, presenting the 2024 results analysis and urging students to strive for academic excellence by committing to institutional targets.
Welcoming New Students
Representing campus student governance, Mr. S. Zitha, from the Student Representative Council (SRC), warmly welcomed the new students, assuring them of the SRC’s commitment to supporting and serving them throughout their academic journey.
Additionally, Mr. D Majola, Head of the Department for Engineering Studies, introduced the campus personnel, familiarizing students with key management and support staff to ensure a smooth transition into college life.
Keynote Address by the Executive Mayor
A highlight of the event was the inspiring address by Honourable Cllr EIT Shabangu. He emphasized the crucial role of education in economic empowerment and the need for constructive dialogue when addressing grievances.
“We do not expect you to resort to violence or destruction when facing challenges. Instead, engage with management to find amicable solutions,” urged Cllr Shabangu.
Furthermore, he stressed the importance of financial literacy, advising students to use financial assistance responsibly rather than indulging in harmful habits. He also encouraged students to apply for the District Municipality’s bursary program, emphasizing that those previously unsuccessful should reapply when applications reopen.
Safety and Student Well-being
A message of support from the South African Police Service was delivered by Captain Z Gcawa from Nelspruit Police Station. She advised students to stay vigilant, avoid accepting rides from strangers, and be cautious at night due to increased crime risks. She also highlighted the importance of understanding Gender-Based Violence (GBV) and the concept of consent, stressing how lack of awareness can negatively impact young men’s futures.
Entrepreneurship and Career Development
Ms. M Lubisi, Business Development Officer at the Centre for Entrepreneurship Rapid Incubator (Barberton Campus), encouraged students to embrace entrepreneurship. She introduced available resources to support business-minded students and announced the Allan Gray competition, urging participation for mentorship and potential funding opportunities.
Campus Housekeeping and Student Support
Mr. Mashego addressed housekeeping matters, emphasizing the importance of maintaining clean facilities and reporting damages promptly.
Mr. Bafedi, Student Support Officer, outlined the comprehensive support services available, covering pre-entry, on-course, and exit support. He encouraged students to take advantage of psycho-social, financial aid, and career guidance services, assuring them of qualified personnel ready to assist.
