Student governance (SRC)
The Student Representative Council is the voice of students in college governance, with representation on the College Council, Academic Board and Financial Aid Committee.
About the SRC
The Student Representative Council is a statutory body that supports the needs and rights of every student at Ehlanzeni TVET College. Students elect the SRC themselves, because the SRC is the umbrella body for all student organisations and students are best placed to choose who speaks for them.
The SRC's role is to unite students across the college and to advance student life in the academic, extra-curricular, social and cultural spheres. It is the highest student decision-making body in the college.
The legal framework
The legal framework prescribes the student governance structure of the college:
- Elections once a year
- On each campus a maximum of 9 members
- A 9-member structure is elected from the 9 members per campus to constitute the Executive Student Representative Council
- The chairpersons of each campus constitute extended members of the Executive SRC, if not already a member of the Executive SRC
- Represents the student body on key decision-making committees such as the College Council, Academic Board and the Financial Aid Committee
- Leadership development workshops are facilitated by SRC staff for the student council members

Who can stand for election
To be nominated for the SRC, a student must:
- Be a full-time student at the college, registered for an NC(V) or Report 191 programme
- Be a South African citizen born in South Africa
- Have achieved an average of 60% across the seven NC(V) subjects or four Report 191 subjects for which they are registered, on Ministerially funded programmes, up to the examination before the elections
- Have passed 7 out of 7 NC(V) subjects, or 4 out of 4 Report 191 subjects, in the examination before the elections
- Have at least 12 months remaining as a full-time registered student at the college
- Have no charges against them for transgression of the Disciplinary Code or other college rules and regulations
Academic results must show that a candidate can manage their own studies, so that they set an example and motivate other students.
Term of office
The SRC serves a term of one academic year. A new SRC takes the oath of office at the college each year to serve the rights and needs of students.
Each campus elects up to nine members, and a nine-member Executive SRC is elected from those campus structures.
What the SRC is entitled to
- Official SRC attire for meetings
- Representation of the student body on key decision-making committees
- Airtime for the President and the Secretary-General
- A fully equipped office at the college
- Transport to approved official workshops and meetings
The college consults the SRC on any matter concerning students.
