Admission requirements
What you need to be admitted to an NC(V) or Report 191 (NATED) programme, the documents to bring, and how the DHET bursary scheme works.
Entry requirements by programme
What you need to be admitted, by programme type:
- NC(V) Level 2: Grade 9 year-end results with Mathematics passed, or an NQF Level 1 qualification, plus the placement assessment
- NC(V) Level 3: an NQF Level 2 qualification in the same programme
- NC(V) Level 4: an NQF Level 3 qualification in the same programme
- Report 191 (NATED) N1: Grade 9
- Report 191 (NATED) N4: a National Senior Certificate (Grade 12)
The Pre-Entry Placement Assessment is compulsory for new students and must be completed by the applicant personally. You keep the right to choose your own course based on your preference.
Documents you need to apply
- Certified copy of your South African ID
- Certified copies of your parents' or guardians' IDs
- Certified copies of IDs of other household dependants
- Certified copy of your latest results
- Proof of address with next-of-kin contact details
- Proof of parents' or guardians' income (salary advice, letter of employment or pension advice)
Documents should not be older than 3 months.
Additional documents for international students
If you are not a South African citizen, bring the following in addition to the documents above:
- Certified copies of your passport
- A valid study permit
- SAQA evaluation of your foreign qualification
- Proof of medical insurance or cover
- Certified English translations of any documents not issued in English
Documents should not be older than 3 months. Note that the DHET bursary scheme below is open to South African citizens only.
DHET TVET bursary scheme
To facilitate access to TVET college programmes, the Department of Higher Education and Training sets aside a budget for bursaries for students enrolling for Report 191 courses and NC(V) programmes. The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) administers the bursaries on behalf of the DHET.
The application process is electronic: students apply online to NSFAS.
Who may apply for a bursary
- New prospective students who have been provisionally accepted, who must apply for a bursary at the campus
- South African citizens only
- Students who are financially needy
- Students who perform academically
- Students not enrolling for a qualification equivalent to previous learning that was state-funded
- NC(V) Level 2 or 3 and Report 191 (NATED) students who were previously awarded bursaries and have academically progressed to the next level
Students previously awarded a bursary who have not academically progressed to the next level are not eligible.
Documents required with a bursary application
- Three certified copies of the student's ID
- Two certified copies of the parents' or guardians' IDs
- Two certified copies of the IDs of other members of the household
- The latest original or certified copies of the parents' or guardians' payslips
- Sworn affidavits from parents or guardians if they are unemployed
- A completed and signed consent form
DHET bursaries are not guaranteed; procedures are in place for their administration and awarding.
